…Targets 2025/26 NPFL title after Remo Stars heartbreak

Rivers United head coach, Finidi George, has expressed confidence that his team will not repeat the errors that cost them the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title last season, as they begin their push for the 2025/26 crown.
The Pride of Rivers began their new campaign with a hard-fought 1-1 draw away to reigning champions Remo Stars at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena last Friday — a result that extended their strong head-to-head record against the Sky Blue Stars. Rivers United have now gone unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 encounters against Remo, winning seven and losing just once.
Speaking ahead of the match, Finidi reflected on their near-miss last term, where they finished second, seven points adrift of Remo Stars. He insists the team has learned from those lapses.
“We know what’s at stake, we know where we slipped last season. I don’t think we will make that mistake this season,” Finidi said.
“We will fight for every point. That’s our focus this season. So, pressure? I don’t think so. But you know how the league is — we just pray for a good start. A good start can propel the team to greater things.”
The former Super Eagles head coach, who took charge of Rivers United last season, believes the squad has what it takes to go all the way this time.
“There is no pressure on my side, but of course the club may be watching results closely. With what we’ve seen from the players, I believe things will work out well,” he added.
Rivers United ended last season with 64 points, a respectable tally but not enough to dethrone a consistent Remo Stars side. With renewed focus and lessons learned, Finidi’s men will hope to go one better in the new campaign and reclaim the title they last won in 2022.
